Jura // France

New to our store (and first time in Singapore!), this is Katie Worobeck, one of Jura's brightest young talents.

2024 was a tough year for most producers in the Jura. Whole harvests were literally lost due to the weather. It’s truly a shame to see such hardworking vignerons struck by such cruel circumstances. The only positive is that it forced some to seek out négociant fruit.

This parcel of old vines Gamay planted over granite in the Southern Beaujolais village of Bully was the one Katie made her first wine from way back when, and so she was very excited to harvest some fruit there again last year. It spent a fortnight on the skins as whole bunches, before a year in casks, and this cooler vintage has provided a light, bright and lively wine that rivals those of the more famous crus to the north.

Katie has a deft hand in the Jura and these are some of the best négociant wines we've had.

Please note that there is a limit of 1 bottle per person.

About the Producer

In just a handful of vintages Katie Worobeck has announced herself as one of the Jura’s brightest young talents.

Hailing from Canada, Katie developed an interest in wine and organic farming whilst studying. Upon moving to France, she landed her dream job with the legendary Anne and Jean-François Ganevat in Jura.

After five years working alongside them, Katie struck out on her own and now tends a picturesque and secluded 3 hectares surrounded by forest in Au Carre high in the picturesque hills around Grusse.

Passionate about soil health and sustainable agriculture, Katie's approach is to work alongside nature, farming organically with biodynamic principles. She has begun planting trees and shrubs amongst the vines and plans to rotate livestock amongst the parcels to promote diversity.

Wines are made in an old cave underneath her home in the village of Orbagna. Here she works with great attention to detail. Pressing is done manually, élevage takes place in old barrels of various sizes and all movement is done by gravity. The wines are bottled unfiltered with no additions.

The name of her project - Maison Maenad - is derived from the stories of Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure. “He has these amazon type women who are with him in the stories, and their name is the maenads,” she explains. “These crazy wild free women are called the maenads."

There is a lightness of touch and finesse that pervades Katie’s work, resulting in delicate, pure and thoughtful wines we love.
