About Jean-Yves Péron
Jean-Yves Péron is a pioneering natural winemaker based in the Savoie region of the French Alps. Born and raised in Savoie, he studied oenology in Bordeaux in the late 1990s and gained experience working with renowned winemakers such as Thierry Allemand in Cornas and Bruno Schueller in Alsace. In 2004, he returned to his native region to establish his own domaine, focusing on reviving ancient vineyards and producing wines that express the unique alpine terroir.
Péron's vineyards are situated on steep, terraced slopes between 350 and 550 meters above sea level, primarily around the medieval village of Conflans and the commune of Fréterive. These plots are planted with old vines—some over a century old—of indigenous grape varieties such as Jacquère, Altesse, Roussanne, and Mondeuse. The soils, rich in mica-schist and limestone, contribute to the distinctive minerality of his wines. Péron practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, eschewing chemical treatments and certifications, preferring to let his wines speak for themselves.
In the cellar, Péron employs low-intervention techniques, including whole-cluster fermentation, indigenous yeasts, and minimal or no added sulfur. His red wines often undergo carbonic maceration, while his white wines may see extended skin contact, resulting in complex, textural expressions reminiscent of Northern Italian "orange" wines. Notable cuvées include "La Petite Robe," "Les Barrieux," and "Côtillon des Dames," each reflecting the nuances of their specific vineyard sites.
Beyond his estate wines, Péron has expanded his repertoire through the "I Vicini" project, collaborating with organic growers in Piedmont, Italy. This initiative allows him to work with Italian grape varieties like Barbera, Grignolino, and Moscato, applying his natural winemaking philosophy to new terroirs. Through both his Savoie-based wines and cross-border collaborations, Jean-Yves Péron continues to redefine the potential of alpine viticulture, crafting wines that are both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.
