Sylvain Bock
Based in Alba-la-Romaine in the Ardèche, Sylvain Bock has been making natural wines since 2010, after learning from local vigneron Gérald Oustric of Domaine Le Mazel. Working with around seven hectares of organically farmed vines, Sylvain draws on a fascinating mix of limestone and volcanic basalt soils, growing varieties including Gamay, Syrah, Grenache and Chardonnay.
In the vineyard, the focus is on healthy grapes and thoughtful farming; in the cellar, it's all about letting the fruit and terroir speak for themselves. Fermentations are spontaneous and interventions are kept to a minimum, resulting in wines that are clean, precise and beautifully made. Expect juicy fruit, refreshing acidity, a subtle mineral edge and a lovely balance of freshness and depth. Best of all, Sylvain manages to deliver all this without the hefty price tag often associated with characterful French wines. Honest, well-crafted and seriously good value, these are bottles that make it easy to come back for another.
