Chenin from old vines on a small parcel between Montbenault and Les Aussigouins, two supreme terroirs. Remarkable freshness and tension, and beautiful minerality.

Grapes are manually harvested, gently pressed then fermented and aged in 1-6 year old oak barrels for 10 months before transferring to stainless steel tank for a few months before bottling. Unfiltered, unfined with low sulphites.

About the Producer

Thomas and Marie-Lise Batardiere make pure and precise low-intervention wines in Anjou, France.

Thomas Batardière studied anthropology and got bitten by the wine bug in 2008 while working as a cinematographer. He later switched careers and worked as a sommelier first before progressing to winemaking at Château Yvonne. He quickly became Mathieu Vallée’s right-hand man whilst studying viticulture in Beaune.

In 2012, he finally struck out on his own in Rablay-sur-Layon (Anjou Noir), and bought a few hectares of Chenin without any cellar or equipment. He built his own cellar and his house right next door to legendary Richard Leroy with whom he has become close to.

Applying biodynamic principles from the get-go, Thomas now tends to 4 hectares of vines, most of which are in the south of the Layon river, in Rablay, on sandy and stony soils with clay over schist. Chenin, Cabernet Franc and Grolleau are grown here. His best parcels of Chenin, including the Clos des Cocus planted in 1968, are found in the stunning coteau of Faye d’Anjou (north of the Layon) in the schist bedrock.

He aims at making zero-sulphur wines, rarely racking and working reductively on the lees.
