Aromas of elderflower, pineapple, melon, and lemon, with a hint of nutmeg-like spice and doughy notes. On the palate, a touch of orange-like sweetness, subtle grapefruit bitterness and a mineral presence.

The Glouglou series is vinified each year using a variety of varieties and blends, based on the concept of a wine that can be drunk in gulps. This is the first time they've released an Orange wine as part of the Glouglou series. The 2023 vintage was made from Chardonnay and Delaware grapes from the Okitama region of Yamagata. 2023 was a very hot year, resulting in a much higher sugar content than in previous years, but at the same time a lower level of acidity. The lack of a significant difference in temperature between day and night meant that colouring was moderate even when the grapes were fully ripe. The orange wine made from this Delaware has a very light-coloured finish. The Chardonnay was harvested in late September at very good ripeness.

The Chardonnay was directly pressed, settled for one day and then transferred to wooden barrels for barrel fermentation. Fermentation of the Chardonnay stopped around December and the wine entered the winter with sugar remaining, but in the spring the weather warmed up and the yeasts started working again, completing fermentation. Fermentation lasted a total of five months. After racking, the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks for a further four months of ageing. The result is a Chardonnay with depth of flavour and soft acidity from the barrel fermentation. The wine was then blended with Delaware wine that had been fermented and macerated in separate stainless steel tanks to add to the pleasant and more drinkable characteristics of the wine.

About the Producer

Fujimaru-san’s project didn’t start out as a winery. When he founded the company in 2006, he wanted to distribute interesting local wines. It wasn't long later that he discovered that the Osaka area has a history of over 120 years of grape growing. But with rapid urbanisation in progress, the vineyards were fast disappearing. Fujimaru-san felt the urge to preserve this important aspect of local heritage, so in 2010 he began to cultivate grapes on an abandoned farm in Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture. His focus was on the Delaware variety, which had been cultivated in the local area for many years. The vineyards soon grew to over 2 hectares. The resulting wines were an instant hit. He started to procure other grapes from local farmers who met his stringent requirement, the same criteria he uses on his own vineyards - no chemicals are used unless absolutely necessary.
