Pierre Fenals has such an interesting background - after a degree in molecular biology and years as a highly-skilled biochemist and physiologist, he switched and headed marketing departments of Parisian fashion houses, before finally embracing his lifelong passion, wine. He came a vigneron at the age of 51, and worked for his favourite growers in Burgundy including Anne-Claude Leflaive, Jean-Louis Trapet in Cote-d'Or but he credits his time with Emmanuel Giboulot as the time he learnt the most.

With his biochemistry background, he realised that lees and their reductive power is an essential tool during vinification 'sans souffre', and took it the next level. After racking, he coats the inside of barrels with fine lees before filling them up again to "protect the young wine", and uses frozen lees from previous vintage to fine and clarify wines towards the end of élevage. The old lees from a particular parcel are warmed up and added to the wine from the same plot - Maison En Belles Lies is therefore a particularly appropriate name! He is also one of the few Burgundian growers that are equally good at vinifying both red and white.

The 60-65yo vines are planted in a deep soil of red clay at the bottom of a hill, lieu-dit Les Caillettes. Vinified from 100% whole bunches and very delicately extracted, aged in 7-10yo pièces bourguignonnes and neither fined nor filtered. Delicate colour, smooth and feminine texture, it's a wine with an excellent core of vibrant red fruits, a display of elegance and harmony. No SO2 added.
