Origin: Auvergne, France
Grapes: Gamay

Jean Maupertuis left his life as a computer scientist to devote himself to what he was really interested in, in the volcanic region of Auvergne, France. He currently cultivates 3.8 hectares of vineyards in the commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier and La Roche Noir. He works mainly with local, old and artisan varieties.

Maupertuis Les Pierres Noires comes from old vines planted in volcanic, basalt and clay soils. The heat of the day and the cold nights cause strong temperature variations that make the grapes more concentrated. These vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and organic treatments, and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

In the winery, Maupertuis Les Pierres Noires ferments through a semi-carbonic whole-cluster maceration for 3 weeks in cement and fibre tanks. The wine has no additives, it is not filtered or clarified.

As the name suggests (“volcanic footprints” in French), Maupertuis Les Pierres Noires is a red wine born and made in the volcanic soils of a very special small vineyard.
