Badenhorst Golden Slopes 2016 Chenin BlancA. A. Badenhorst
Origin: Swartland, South Africa
Grape: Chenin Blanc
Class: Organic, Natural
One of South Africa's finest Chenins. This wine has amazing mouth feel with great texture and freshness. It has a lovely bouquet of Japanese Yuzu, quince, lemon, lemongrass, and thyme with a lovely acidity. Pair with roasted chicken, pork, pastas in cream.
The name Golden slopes comes from the vineyard being planted high on the Paardeberg mountain and the steep terraces and the fact that right before harvest the hillside turns a lovely golden color. The vineyard was planted in the 1970s and they still do things the same way when it comes to vitification. The vineyard yields about 2 tons and the grapes are pressed and run off into older casks for fermentation and aging. The juice is then put into 1200 foudres for the fermentation and maturation of 15 months. Only 1600 bottles of this wine are produced and is some of the best Chenin Blanc coming out of South Africa.
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930 s to make natural wines in the traditional manner.
